By admin No Comment
25Feb, 2022

Welcome to our seventh edition, in which you will find relevant information about the importance of boundaries in teenagers, as well as a brief explanation of IB policies at Celtic School.

During March, at the school we will have two important events CISMUN and Art and Culture Week, which allow our students demonstrate and put into practice their critical and creative thinking, transfer, organization, affective and reflection skills. We invite you to participate of our events.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

Alicia Silva Lara | MYP Coordination

IB POLICIES – CELTIC INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

During the last few weeks at the school, we have been working collaboratively, teachers and staff members, to revise the different policies we have at Celtic School, this as part of a self-reflective process in the day-to-day work of all of us who work in the IB programmes (International Baccalaureate.)

Such policies are documents that clearly state what we, as a learning community, are expected to support in our students’ learning process from academic probity, inclusive education, assessment, language development and access to education.

They are directly aligned to our philosophy as a school and the IB statement of principles; therefore, we are encouraged to show in these documents the actual practices that happen within the school, in the different subjects.

They are documents that are periodically reviewed and improved, adjusted them to Celtic School’s context. They are developed collaboratively and each and every school’s policy pursues a specific objective. I describe below what our policies are and the purpose of each of them.

Academic probity policy: it is a document that clearly states the expected behavior and the consequences of improper conduct.

Language policy: it is a concrete expression of the school’s linguistic philosophy. It outlines the objectives of language teaching and learning for all the linguistic profiles of the students in the school community.

Inclusion policy: it explains how all the students, including those with special educational needs or diversity related learning needs, can access teaching and learning and have an equity-based program experience.

Assessment policy: it describes how the school applies the assessment philosophy of the different IB programmes in its local educational context.

Admissions policy: it shows the procedures that are part of the school’s admission process as part to establish and know the development of the student who enters the school.

Once the policy review cycle among teachers is concluded, we will be pleased to share with our community through the IB news section how we articulate the policies from the different aspects of our school with the IB programmes.

DEVELOPMENT OF OUR ADOLESCENTS

Psych. Patsy Luna Espinosa | Student Activities Coordinator

THE IMPORTANCE OF BOUNDARIES IN ADOLESCENCE

Adolescence is a stage full of physical, psychological, emotional and social changes where the adolescent generates questions such as: Who am I? What do I want or what do I like? What circle do I belong to? It is the stage where there are most of the physical changes, to some adolescents these changes can cause them from curiosity to anxiety, the desire for autonomy, decision and choice of their own interests awakens, which is why as parents we must be alert to any situation that we observe in them. Exercising boundaries in our children is one of the tasks that are believed to be more complicated to some extent with fear of making a bad decision and affect our children, but certainly boundaries are essential at this stage because they help adolescents to improve their behavior, self-esteem and reinforce values. There is a misconception about them, not all boundaries should be in the form of punishment, repressions, yelling, etc. We can start with basic things such as showing interest and curiosity in the talks and interests of our children, in this way we can generate a close bond between them and a good communication, therefore the teenager without knowing will see us as an authority figure without relying on punishment, it is here in this link where we must explain that every action has a consequence and let him know that every decision he makes should be in his own interest and if it is a wrong decision he will have to take responsibility for his actions. It is important that the adolescent is aware that wherever he is there are limits, rules and norms that must be respected in order to have a healthy coexistence, a balanced society and a body in homeostasis.

Here are some tips to set boundaries correctly:

  • Be firm and clear in the decision taken.
  • Get into agreements.
  • Be coherent.
  • Always explain the reason of the limit.
  • Maintain the same discourse between parents.
  • Recognize their achievements and when they respect a limit.
  • Do not give them options.
  • Control our emotions.

Let’s learn to set boundaries naturally so that this issue does not frustrate us, on the contrary, let’s take advantage of each of the actions taken by our children to always have a good communication, healthy coexistence and above all, a relationship with assertive communication and support between parent and child.
