The Projects of the International Baccalaureate Programs
By Alicia Silva
Through the IB programs and according to our students’ abilities, we meet the challenges of the International Baccalaureate Projects.
Beginning with the PYP Exhibition, in which, from the final collaborative experience of the last year of the PYP, students are part of an authentic process, in which they explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal importance. This allows them to design their own learning objectives and establish their own success criteria, tracking their learning, documenting it and presenting it. This exhibition is designed as an authentic endeavor for the community to assess their implementation of the PYP and for students to celebrate their accomplishments.
In the Middle Years Program (MYP), students are faced with autonomy and the use of the skills acquired during the four years of the MYP. It is the moment in which our students show their best attributes and the skills that they have been honing, improving and acquiring during their previous four years. They work throughout the entire school year in the ‘Project’, facing challenges, disappointments, important decisions and a whole self-management in which self-knowledge of the skills and their areas of opportunity are vital to complete said project that can become a challenge, more than with the Program, it is with themselves. It is one more step in their academic life that prepares them for the future in the Reflection Project of the Career-related Program (CP) and their university life, even providing evidence to their academic curriculum.
The Reflection Project as part of the Career-related Program is one of the mandatory core components of the Career- related Program. It is carried out over two years and presented at the end of the CP. It aims to foster the development of research, writing and high-level advanced communication skills, as well as intellectual discovery and creativity, through a series of different approaches. It focuses on an ethical dilemma concerning a subject directly related to the student’s professional training studies.
