Why should we be caring people?

Maybe we should star by knowing what the word caring means. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as: feeling or showing concern for or kindness to others.

Notice that the International Baccalaureate also has this attribute regarding caring and defines it as following: They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Both of these definitions have something in common, empathy, being empathic toward others feeling and needs. But what does this have to do with us, as school?

Well, everything, every day we work with our students to be caring people, guiding by example, helping our community (students, teachers, satff, parents) and the place in which we live. They start to understand that we can contribute to our community in many positive ways, we can start by helping someone with their bags (from the grocery), taking care of living things, helping at home with the chores, helping a classmate with a project or homework (helping him/her to understand it). We plant this seed in them when being young, by the time they reach Middle and High school, they will be able to understand the importance of being caring, by developing a project (Personal Project or Reflective Project) that thrives to help and improve our community.

Many of our students seek different ways to do so, such as creating a water filter for people that live places in which having access to water is not easy; also by creating websites to adopt and take care of street animals, such as dogs or cats; fundraising events to help homeless children, just to mention a few.

As you can see, here at Colegio Celta we are always making sure that our students grow by taking action in contributing for a better community, by being caring.

Answering the question, yes, because we grow as better human beings and society, society in which we live and would like to see it better day by day.
