Community Service
A characteristic of the IB
Por: Rose Bedolla, Coordinadora del Continuo IB
What triggers our IB students around the world to contribute to help their community? Well, there is a reason, from a young age, students get to learn about how the world works, culture, traditions, education, technology, current events, they think, how can I help the world become a better place? This is how they start creating, they become responsible of their learning and transform it into an action.
A clear example of it is taking care of our planet, they have many ways to express the importance of it and create awareness, through campaigns, letters, posters, but let us not go so far, last year many IB students gathered and participated in a strike in order to protest against climate change. Students did this, because they did their research and learnt about the consequences of not taking action and wanting to make a positive impact in their community. Building students with strong values and determination.
Many of our students have created projects for our community, like, helping children to learn another language, or create water filters and bring them to those places that cannot have easy access to water, by using the rain water.
Recently, a student from the Canadian International School developed a project to help the visually impaired, by composing a song with common sounds heard though out his community! The song is titled “The Black Box song”. Isn’t that amazing?
Our IB students are always seeking for ways to contribute to our community and making it a better place, students with values, being caring, reflexive, inquirers, thinkers; as teachers, we will continue to support their interest, dreams and ideas to make them possible!
As a fun fact, Do you know any former IB students?
Justin Trudeau
The current Canadian prime minister graduated the IB diploma in the late 1980s and is the epitome of an IB graduate. The IB tries to foster good communicators, open-mindedness, internationalism, collaboration, and community service and it can easily be said that Trudeau is known for all those qualities. He has even said in multiple statements that the IB played a large role in defining the person he is today!
Lupita Nyong’o
The true embodiment of an IB student, Lupita is a Kenyan-Mexican actress who graduated from St. Mary’s School in Nairobi in 2001 with an IB Diploma. She, among other classes, took IB Theatre during her time in the diploma, which played a large part in her acceptance to Hampshire College to study film and theatre. Lupita has won an academy award, and been nominated for Tony’s, Golden Globes, and Teen Choice Awards.
